Our journey began back in 1999 when I managed private in-store ATMs while owning and operating convenience stores in the Boston, MA area. After my family exited the business in 2016, I moved to Sacramento, CA, where a chance encounter on the side of the freeway changed everything.
One day, after delivering pizzas for my family’s restaurant, I noticed a woman stranded with a flat tire. I offered to help her, and although she was initially skeptical, she eventually agreed. As I pulled out her spare tire, I noticed a stack of ATM stickers in her trunk. We struck up a conversation about her business while I changed her tire. I didn’t accept any payment or exchange contact information, but two days later, I was approached by my bank branch manager. She described the incident in detail, even recognizing me by the smell of pepperoni on my uniform. The woman I had helped was one of the bank’s customers, and she had been hoping to find a way to thank me.
That encounter led me to purchase her route of ATM locations as a side business. Since then, what began as a supplementary income stream has grown into my primary focus, especially following the COVID-19 pandemic.
P.S. Yes, I did drive a Honda Ridgeline and carried a gallon of water, an empty gas can and jumper cables to help strangers… since then I drive an EV and yet carry similar items to help people whenever I can… The goodness still exists in this world…
